Field conditions across southwestern Ontario have been variable through April, with progress largely dependent on soil type and recent rainfall patterns. Lighter-textured soils have seen some early field activity, while heavier ground continues to hold moisture and limit access.
Soil temperatures have been gradually increasing, with daytime conditions pushing toward the 18–20°C range in many areas. However, overnight cooling has slowed consistent warming, keeping most soils just on the edge of ideal planting conditions.
Fit conditions remain the primary focus. While there is some temptation to start early, especially on well-drained fields, avoiding compaction is critical at this stage. Soil structure going into the season will have a lasting impact on emergence, root development, and overall crop performance.
Where fields are ready, some early spring cereals and limited soybean acres have been planted. Corn planting remains minimal, with most growers waiting for more stable soil temperatures and improved conditions.
Looking ahead, continued monitoring of soil moisture and temperature trends will be key. A stretch of warm, dry weather would allow for rapid progress, but until then, patience will be important to avoid setting the crop back before it even emerges.
Some growers chose to leave their corn out over winter, and it seems to have worked this time as yields are still in the high 200’s with a moisture between 13-15%. However, any field that was left out, will have volunteer corn in this year’s crop. Make sure to have a strong volunteer corn herbicide program planned or volunteer corn may cause issues with your 2026 crop.
Every year the benefits of a fall burndown before winter wheat planting are very evident. This year is no different. In fields that did not have a burndown, heavy dandelion and chickweed pressures have been noted. In fields that received a burndown, weed pressures are minimal. It is imperative to control these problem weeds early, contact your Sylvite Team for best products and timing of application.
