Certified or Bin Run Seed – That is the question!
It’s the debate that comes to light every year. There are many positives and negatives to both these options. It is important to look at all the factors when choosing your seed for the 2021 planting season.
Quality was great in the 1st -2nd week of the 2021 harvest but many areas received substantial rainfall resulting in a delayed harvest and some quality issues. If keeping seed back to plant, make sure to get it tested by a certified lab to ensure you are planting the best quality with the highest germination %.
The benefits of certified wheat seed that are well established:
- Genetic purity: you can be assured of exactly what you are planting;
- Clean seed: certified seed has strict limitations on weed and other crop seeds allowed;
- Seed quality: uniform size and few damaged kernels enhances uniformity, vigor, germination, and establishment;
- Lower disease incidence
